If you are aware of the current date or day of the week, you would think that a calendar is useless. Virtual calendars, which can be installed on your desktop computer have a few extra functions, which may not be enough to attract you, but you should know that there is much more you can do with Desktop iCalendar. Appointments settings, flexible customization options, sharing or synchronization are just a few of its features.

The application can be installed swiftly, after downloading the 1.68 Mb setup kit. There is no need to install additional tools or services before running Desktop iCalendar and its system requirements are low, but a constant Internet connection is recommended.

If you launch the application for the first time, you will have to make some initial configurations. A wizard will guide you through the process, during which you have to choose what type of calendar to add. You may add a local calendar, from .ics files created by certain applications, a Google personal or public calendar or Yahoo or other CalDAV calendars. Depending on your choice, the following stages will be different, but not difficult. You will have to load an .ics file from your hard drive, sign into a Google account and so on.

The application will place a transparent calendar on your desktop, as well as a weather forecast window, of the same size, and two smaller windows, where you can add tasks and appointments. Tasks can be created on a separate window, where you need to select a calendar (local, public, etc) type in a summary and a description, set up a timetable, select a category, priority and more. Appointments can be set up with similar options, but you may also make it recurring, on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis. Alternatively, you may create appointments by double clicking a date on the calendar. It is also possible to activate a reminder for the created tasks or alarms for your appointments.

If you do not want anything else besides the calendar, you can disable the other windows by right clicking on the application's system tray icon and using the options in the context menu. The menu includes other options as well. You can use them to access the application's general settings panel, manage your calendars, edit the skin of each window and synchronize with a remote calendar. You can also share your personal calendars with friends and set permissions to manage your events or just view them.

Pros

The calendar's skin is well designed and you can choose other ones as well. You can set up appointments and tasks and activate alarms or reminders. The application allows you to share or synchronize your calendar as well.

Cons

There are no drawbacks to encounter. Desktop iCalendar is more than a simple calendar tool. You can use it to manage your schedule, share it with your friends and much more. Any action can be performed without difficulties, thanks to its well organized functions.
